Ornithine Summary

All Ornithine Benefits/Effects/Facts & Information

Ornithine is an amino acid that does not function as a building block for proteins. It is formed from arginine during the urea cycle and converts to L-Citrulline. Since ornithine is an amino acid, it is naturally found in foods such as meat, fish, and dairy. While humans ingest approximately 5g of ornithine per day, the body is capable of producing ornithine on its own because arginine is a nonessential amino acid. This means that an ornithine deficiency is highly unlikely.

Ornithine reduces ammonia levels in the blood, and so is usually only used as a supplement when a person has elevated ammonia levels. Causes of elevated ammonia levels include hepatic encephalopathy, inebriation, and intense exercise.

While studies have shown that an ornithine supplement can help reduce fatigue for encephalopathy and the aftermath of inebriation, little evidence supports ornithine use to improve physical stamina during exercise.

Ornithine Benefits:

  • Reduces ammonia levels in the blood
  • Improves fatigue associated with hepatic encephalopathy and inebriation
  • May potentially reduce fatigue during prolonged exercise
